Herdade de Monte da Ribeira

Herdade do Monte da Ribeira dates back to 8/4/1958, being acquired in 1986 by the industrialist Victor Carmona e Costa who, in the following 15 years, not only completely renovated the Herdade, but also implanted the entire current agricultural production structure and winery.

The Herdade is owned by Casa Agrícola HMR SA which is entirely owned by a foundation bearing the name of its two Founders, the Victor and Graça Carmona e Costa Foundation. The Foundation, with its own headquarters and premises in Lisbon, is dedicated to supporting contemporary art in Portugal and Casa Agrícola HMR SA is one of its foundational assets.

The estate is located in the parish of Pedrogão, in the Vidigueira municipality, near the village of Marmelar - about 17 km east of Vidigueira. Very close to the Alqueva reservoir, in a straight line about 13 km.

It covers an area of around 1,100 hectares, most of which is on the southern slopes of the Serra do Mendro and is made up of Mediterranean forest, with various species of indigenous trees, including the cork oak, wild olive tree, holm oak and strawberry tree.

The Herdade's first vineyard was planted in 1989 and the first harvest in 1992 and marketed under the Vidigueira brand. Later the Pousio and Quatro Caminhos brands were added and recently, the Marmelar brand. In recent years the winery has expanded and restructured, currently occupying 43 hectares. The white varieties (Alvarinho, Antão Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro and Verdelho) occupy 1/3 of the total vineyard area and the red varieties (Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Baga, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira) occupy the remaining 2/3. When production is abundant, the Herdade produces almost 400,000 bottles of white, red and rosé wine.

Since its first harvest, it has received several national and international awards and distinctions.
In 2018 the first monocasta is launched, recognised nationally and internationally for its excellent quality, thus the first Pousio "Alicante Boushet" is born.

In 2019 the brands "Quatro Caminhos", "Pousio Selection", "Pousio Escolha", "Pousio Reserva" and premium red "Marmelar" were marketed. It also succeeded the "Pousio Arinto", with plenty of freshness and notes of Grapefruit.

Herdade do Monte da Ribeira's strategy focuses on the production and marketing of its own winery, starting from its increasingly qualitative vineyards.

The ambition is always to produce the best wines.
